phil laak Phil Laak Wins Party Poker World Open

A star studded final 7 sat down in the Palm Beach Casino in Mayfair last night for the Party Poker World Open V final table to duke it out for the $250,000 first prize. Last night the eccentric Phil Laak came up trumps, beating a final table that included his girlfriend Jennifer Tilly, to win the TV shootout event when he beat Jan Veit heads up (And avenging his missus Jennifer Tilly, who bust out in 4th at the hands of Veit). Andy Black was the first player to bite the dust, swifty followed by this years new poker hall of fame inductee Mike Sexton, with loudmouth UK player

Luke 'Fullflush' Schwartz exiting in 3rd place. In the end the A8 of Laak was too good for the A4 of Veit (Hitting an 8 on the flop), which gave the Unabomber a massive chip lead, which soon saw him eliminate the internet qualifier for his first major title in five years.

International Poker Open This WeekendIPO
The Boylepoker International Poker Open is now underway and a new world record is about to be smashed. More than 1,400 players are confirmed for the$225+$25 event, which will set a new record for the largest tournament outside of the United States. Lots of big names have confirmed for the event including Marty Smyth, Padraig Parkinson, Andy Black, Luke Schwartz, Neil Channing, Surinder Sunar, Julian Gardner, Lucy Rokach, Simon Trumper, Jude Ainsworth, Maria Demetriou, Richard Ashby, Noel Furlong, George McKeever, and Ken Doherty. Your very own Barry Carter will also be there donating, so there is plenty of value in this one.

Paul Spillane, head of boylepoker.com said, "The IPO is one of the highlights of the poker year with a massive international field, terrific structure, huge prize pool and all the fun you'd expect from a weekend in Dublin. For those who couldn't make it be sure to check our new-look poker blog where we'll be posting bust outs, chip counts, colourful tales, videos and live streaming of the final table."

Low Numbers at GUKPT Thanet
It was a much smaller turnout for the first day of the latest GUKPT Main Event in Thanet, with just 50 players for day 1a. This hardly comes as a surprise and the organisers were fully aware of such a smaller attendance when you consider how expensive poker has been over the last month during the WSOPE and EPT in London, add to that the fact that 1400 players are expected in Dublin for the IPO this week and the fact that Thanet is not the easiest place in the UK to travel to. 23 players remain from day 1a with some big names still in, including Roberto Romanello and Jeff Kimber. More players are expected today for day 1b, including JP Kelly, Praz Bansi and James Akenhead.
