Whilst the final nine players in the World Series of Poker Main event were preparing for the biggest night of their lives, there was the London Calling Main Event taking place at the excellent Fox Poker Club in London. The £500+£40 two-day event attracted 120 players and when the dust had settled it was 25-year old Chris Gordon who emerged as the winner, scooping the £17,000 first place prize.
Gordon (pictured above credit to Anne Laymond) is a Stockbroker who is originally from Southend-On-Sea and despite being an amateur player, he has amassed some excellent results in the live poker arena. Prior to this latest victory Gordon's largest cash was for £14,490, which he was awarded finishing fifth in the £1,000 Monte Carlo at Dusk Till Dawn in December 2010, a tournament that saw Jack Ellwood finish second in and also saw William Fry, Jerome Bradpiece, Amy Trodd, Scott Shelley, Toby Lewis, Steve Jelinek and Cos Paparestis make it to the money places.
The Fox Poker Club's London Calling Main Event was also a very tough field and the final table was very tough indeed, being the home to the British legend that is Willie Tann and young cash game pro Chuck Clark. Tann would go on to finish seventh for £2,400 whilst Clark would go one better and finish in sixth place for £3,000.
Gordon went into the heads up battle with Bruno Fernandes with a substantial 2,000,000 to 700,000 chip lead and refused Fernandes' request to strike a deal. However, on the very first hands of heads-up Bruno doubled up with
against Gordon's
and Gordon instantly asked, “Do you wanna do a deal now?” The answer was yes and they agreed to pay an extra £3,100 to the eventual runner-up.
Around 45-minutes later it was all over. Fernandes found himself down to 600,000 and he moved all in with
. Gordon said, “If I have more than two million I'm probably calling.” He did indeed have more than 2,000,000 and true to his word, made the call with
. The board ran out

and Gordon's straight won the hand and the entire tournament.
The next Main Event is the monthly £300+£25 on December 3 at 1500 UK time and qualification is open now both at the Fox Poker Club and online at the 3D poker site PKR.
