The hugely popular San Remo leg on the PokerStars European Poker Tour kicks off today and a bumper crowd is expected as many of the world's best players are only an hour or so away from the casino after participating at the now completed World Series of Poker Europe.
The €4,600 +$300 San Remo Main Event is by far the best attended stop on the EPT, with a combined 2,227 players taking part over the past two years and British players have had huge success in this tournament, with the past two champions being stars from our shores.
Liv Boeree was catapulted into the limelight in 2010 when she outlasted a massive crowd of 1,240 players to get her hands on the wallet-bursting €1,250,000 first place prize. Joining Miss Boeree on the final table was Michael “Wazz” Piper who finished in fourth place, picking up €345,000 for his efforts.
Last year another British player took down the Main Event, Rupert Elder, picking up a cool €930,000. As in the previous season, Elder was joined in the latter stages of the event by a fellow UK player in Andrew Teng but the man affectionately known in online poker circles as Tufat23 succumb in 12th place.
According to his Twitter feed, Elder is already in San Remo and is booked to play on Day 1a

ruperte Rupert Elder Day 1a of EPT San Remo, time to do a win!
October 21 2011
Should Elder do the unthinkable and defend his title, or "do a win" as he says, he would become the first-ever winner of two EPT titles. Other Brits who are playing the San Remo Main Event who could also become a double EPT winner are David Vamplew, Toby Lewis, Roberto Romanello, the aforementioned Miss Boeree and surely Jake Cody is going to dust himself down after his horrendous beat at the WSOPE Main Event final table and show the Italians how it is done.
As is usually the case the PokerNews Live Reporting team are in San Remo and will be bringing you all the action as it happens from the Main Event s be sure to check them out.
