Live poker in the UK is alive and kicking, which has been mirrored once again by the Genting Poker Players Championship in Birmingham over the weekend. You only need to look at events like the IPO, the PokerStars UKIPT, DTD Deepstack & the Dusk Till Dawn Grand Prix to know that if you host mid stakes events with big capacities or guarantees, you will command large fields; that’s what happened at the Star City Casino in Brum.
£10,000 was added to the prize pool and as a result, 302 players took part in the £150 event. The eventual winner was professional player Dominic Kay who chopped the event with John Exley, but the pair agreed to play out for the prestigious trophy and a seat package for the December Palm Beach Big Game worth another £1300 added to the pot by Genting during the final table. Kay took £12,000 and Exley £10,910.
“It means a lot. In fact I am blown away” he commented. “I play a lot online of course and I have won some minor live events the type worth a few hundred pounds - but to win the Players Championship feels incredible. I didn’t mind doing a deal on the money with John, but I really wanted the seat and trophy, I have been looking at it all weekend. As a kid I won a few trophies at sports days, but nothing as big as this and believe me I feel proud.”
