UK poker pro and Heavy Metal fan Liv Boeree has just won EPT San Remo, defeating Jakob Carlsson heads up for a €1,250,000 pay day. Boeree outlasted 1239 other players to win the biggest ever EPT field assembled in Europe. Not only is this the biggest score by a long way for the former astrophysics student, it will probably go down as one of the biggest results by a UK player in quite a while for a number of reasons.
Boeree is only the third woman to win an EPT event and, alongside Vicky Coren, is the 2nd British woman to capture an EPT title. Boeree is also the 2nd UK player of 2010 to win an EPT after Jake Cody won EPT Deauville earlier this year. This is also one of the biggest prizes of the year so far in Europe and will put Boeree right up there in the European rankings.
Liv was already something of a celebrity figure on the International poker circuit. The UltimateBet pro was already well known for modelling shoots, a reality TV show, winning the European Ladies Championships and knowing her way around an electric guitar. Now with this win, the poker media darling is destined to become a mega star of the game, and possibly beyond.
Her mentor of many years, Annie Duke, is enjoying mainstream success in America right now and there is nothing to say Boeree can’t do the same over here now. An attractive likeable girl, she will no doubt have a mainstream appeal to both men and women alike, and now with such a prestigious title to back it up, she could be a true crossover star, winning over experienced players while at the same time bringing new ones to the game of poker.
She may have a hard time getting out of San Remo, what with Volcano’s and all, but we doubt the newest European Poker Tour champion will mind all that much hanging around a little longer. Congratulations to Liv Boeree and if you want to see how she did it, check out our Live Updates.
