Poker in the UK Tabloids, O'Leary wins Player of the Series in Vegas + more

Lovejoy wins Venetian Player of the Series

Kevin 'Lovejoy' O'Leary finished 7th in the Venetian Deepstack Extravaganza Main Event last night, which bagged him the player of the series award. In total he won two side events outright for a total of $59,000 and won $24,000 for his deep finish in the Main Event. Add to this the player of the series prize of $9000 and the Londoner will return home with over $90,000 and presumably one hell of a hangover. A big well done from everyone at Pokernews and watch this space for our interview with this king of deepstack poker very soon.

PartyPoker Million this Sunday

This Sunday is the second Party Poker Monthly Million, the $600+$40 championship style event from the top European poker room, which guarantees a million dollar prize pool once a month. Last month Popeye7111 won $155,000 in the debut event and you could do the same this month for peanuts by qualifying in a number of ways at Party Poker from as little as $1. The wide range of qualifiers includes $64+$6 daily satellites with 18 seats guaranteed, a Mega Friday $50+$5 satellite that guarantees 30 seats and Super Satellite Saturday qualifiers with a $32+$3 buy-in and 25 seats guaranteed.

Poker Tabloid Round Up

Yes the UK tabloids are once again making thinly veiled references to poker within their pages. Following last week's Vanessa Rousso feature in the Sun, this time it was the turn of a celebrity turning to poker. Robbie Williams has moved back to the UK and has been seen playing cards in the local card room in Swindon with his pal Jonathan Wilkes. Onlookers have said that he has been playing to a very high standard and it wouldn't surprise us to see him catch the eye of a few poker sponsors. Being a multi millionaire who has plenty of time on his hands at the moment, no doubt he has no shortage of opponents and we could expect quite a few UK pros making the commute to Swindon in the near future.

A much more disturbing news item came when a pensioner was burgled and went to his local police headquarters to report it, but was told police officers were unable to help him as they were there for a poker night and he couldn't report the crime as they were not in an official police station. Of course the issue here was that he wasn't helped by the officers, not that they were playing poker, but that didn't stop that element being sensationalised by the mainstream press.

PKR Launch Massive Saturday Tournament

The fastest growing poker room in the world, PKR Poker are really putting themselves on the map this weekend by boasting the biggest buy-in tournament anywhere in online poker on Saturday night. The $500 Saturday Big Shot will be the biggest tournament of the night at 8pm GMT and has one of the best structures, with 10,000 chips and 20 minute levels. Players can parlay their way into the event for as little as $5.06 round the clock on PKR Poker.

Neil Wright of PKR commented "We're delighted to be able to introduce the Saturday Big Shot. There's been a growing demand from our players for a big buy-in event with an ultra-playable structure and we're happy to oblige. It shows just how far we've come that Saturday night's biggest buy-in tournament will be at PKR."
