WSOP Brit' Watch: Steve Davis amongst the big stacks
2008-07-10 Barry Carter
Although we are down to a mere 1308 players remaining in the second largest WSOP field ever assembled, it's still a little too early to be jumping up and down about the Brits in the field seeing as the chip leader has well over 800,000 chips. It's hard to actually see a Brit name in the nosebleed section of the chip counts, but we still have plenty of names with healthy stacks in the mix.
The current UK chip leader is Keith 'the Camel' Hawkins who is certainly due a big result and is mixing it up with the big boys with an impressive 224,100 stack. Just behind him is World Heads-up Champion and GUKPT Walsall winner Jeff 'Jaffacake' Kimber with 174,200.
The big surprise of the WSOP for
the UK so far has been the rise and rise of snooker legend Steve Davis with 143,500 chips and has been steadily amassing a big stack since day one. He is joining Jeff Kimber as the team captain of Ladbrokes this year for the third year in a row and actually cashed in this event in 2006.
Davis said after the end of day 2: "I've really been playing my A game and it seems to have paid off so far. Obviously there are still a few days remaining but I'm going to take each day as it comes."
Two old pros from the UK have also kept themselves well in the mix, Paul Jackson and Dave Colclough both with around 120,000 chips. Currently in contention for European player of the year, three time GUKPT finalist Nik Persuad is also around the 120,000 as is Welsh tournament specialist Iwan Jones on around 115,000.
Other notable names include two time WSOP final table maker Spencer Lawrence on under just 100,000 and online cash giant Richard 'Chufty' Ashby on about 80,000. We are about halfway towards the bubble which will really separate the men from the boys. Can Steve Davis cash for the 2nd time in three years?
