The 2nd leg of the Gala Coral Great British Poker Tour was in Nottingham last weekend, to put test to our claims that the City is the new capital of UK poker. The presence of Dusk Till Dawn round the corner seemed to hinder, rather than help, the Nottingham leg of the Genting Stanley Poker Championships last month, but this was not to be the case this time as 224 players made it to the centre to play this event.
£550 seems to be something of a cutoff amount that attracts a healthy amount of pros and recreational players alike. Plenty of new faces were joined by the likes of Dave Colclough, Maria Demetriou and Dave Smith. Across two day ones, 43 players in total made it to the final day on
Sunday, with half of them going home empty handed as the money bubble burst at 20.
This event saw two players prove they were not just one hit wonders, as James Keys and Dominic Kay, both who made the WSOPE final table, found their way into the money. Kay finished in 11th whereas young Keys made plenty of waves at the final table, which started like this:
James Keys 340,000
Richard Howe 329,000
Thomas Rutter 318,500
Daniel Byrom 315,000
Rupinder Bedi 269,500
Dave Maudlin 247,500
Luong-Huu Bui 216,500
Steve Milton 111,500
Gordon McArthur 98,500
Thomas Rutter, brother of UK Pokernews writer Stuart Rutter who himself came 2nd in this event last year, finished in 4th place and was quickly followed by Luong-Huu Bui. This led to a heads up match between the now heavily chipped up Rupinder 'George' Bedi and WSOPE finalist James Keys. Bedi simply had too big a stack to contend with for Keys and eventually it went down to the A7 of Keys being no match for the A9 of Bedi, who wins £27,000 and a seat in the GBPT Grand Final.
