The Grosvenor UK Poker Tour rolled on as strongly as ever last week in Manchester, with 309 players trying to emulate last year's winner Dave Colclough. In the end it would be two worthy UK legends to fight out the title, with Marc 'Mr Cool' Goodwin coming out on top.
The final table would be composed of a number of men that are arguably due a major tournament win, including Paul Gourlay, in-form Pete Linton, GUKPT regular Nik Persaud and of course Mr Goodwin. Zachary Ford went into the final as the leader, closely followed by Goodwin and Persaud:
Marc Goodwin -- 517,000
Zachary Ford -- 614,000
Charles Ihle -- 241,000
Paul Gourlay -- 225,000
Nik Persaud --
559,000
Aarun Bernard -- 294,500
Paul Lammas -- 223,000
Laurance Houghton -- 243,500
Pete Linton -- 205,500
There may have been seven other men at the table, but this really was the story of Goodwin and Persaud, who were the most active men at the table. Regularly in tussles with each other, they took it in turns to dispatch the other competitors at the table. The chip lead changed hands between the two men until Goodwin busted Zachary Ford in 3rd place and went into heads up with almost a 2:1 chip lead on Persaud.
It was a relatively short heads up match between these two ambassadors of UK poker, when all the chips went in the middle of a A-T-3 flop. Goodwin held A-8 to the K-T of Persaud and although a jack on the turn brought extra outs, the man they call Mr Cool held on to lift the title.
Hats off really have to go to runner up Nikhil Persaud, who has made his third GUKPT final table of the year and his best result so far, having come 4th in Walsall and 6th in Brighton. So far he has cashed in 6 GUKPT events since the tour started last year and has leapfrogged into top spot in the GUKPT player of the year race. Most experts agree a GUKPT title is not far beyond his reach.
The tour stops in Newcastle next month from the 14th of May before taking a short break during the World Series of Poker. The final table payed out as follows:
Marc Goodwin £90,420
Nik Persaud £52,530
Zachary Ford £37,850
Charles Ihle £25,490
Aarun Bernard £19,310
Laurence Houghton £15,450
Paul Gourlay £12,360
Paul Lammas £9,270
Pete Linton £6,950
