Jeff Kimber, widely known as "Jaffacake", has won the WHUPC in Barcelona, defeating fellow English youngster Daniel Carter in what turned out to be a great event for British players.
Long term UK Poker News readers will know all about Jeff Kimber. We published our in-depth interview with him last summer as part of our "Rising Stars" series here.
So, it's no surprise to us that Jeff has just picked up the World Heads Up Poker Champs title and a cool €125,000 to boot. Kimber dominated the final against Danial Carter. Establishing an early lead which saw him boast a 6:1 chip lead at the first break. Sadly, for
Carter, the tide never turned and Kimber ran out the comprehensive winner of this match up.
Carter, who had earlier in the tournament sent The Devilfish packing with a superb display of poker that defied the inexperience of the 19 year old, was forced to push his low stack all in with shortly after the break. Kimber, who could smell blood in the water, pounced, calling with . The flop was of no threat to "Jaffacake", just Queen high. The turn paired Kimber's King, but Carter still had straight draw outs. The river sealed the deal, though, a painful Jack for Carter that resulted in unbridled elation for Kimber.
Praise should be given to Carter for his performance throughout this years WHUPC. An extremely strong field meant few, if any, were tipping the young Englishman to go far in Barcelona. His €60,000 pay day will go some way to numbing the pain of defeat today.
128 players paid €2,500 to take part in the WHUPC this year. A good number of those walked away with a healthy profit which will surely only further enhance the popularity of this tournament.
