Grosvenor Casino, Luton was the place to be last week. Stars from the UK poker scene descended on the popular Bedforshire venue to slug it out for some hefty prizepools.
The Grosvenor Casino card room in Luton is one of the more popular venues amongst UK players. The friendly atomsphere and excellent staff are much appreciated by all attendees at festival time. So, it was no surprise that last week a bumper crowd turned up to grab a slice of the action.
The week kicked off with a wallet friendly £200+£20 No Limit Hold 'Em freezeout. This two day event packed the card room to capacity with 150 runners. Englishman, Bill Davey took the honours and £9,150 for his efforts.
Next, the £500 Pot Limit Hold 'Em took centre stage. The big guns took aim and most of them hit their targets. Mickey Wernick again made the final here in 4th. But, it was Mike Magee who pushed much loved Cypriot, Charalambos Xanthos, all the way. Xanthos eventually coming out on top, winning £17,670.
On Thursday the buy-ins increased to £750 as the Double Chance Freezeout begun. Once again the big names did not disappoint. Wernick, again finalling in 7th. Xanthos, on the back of his earlier win, took a creditable 9th. Joe Grech showed his class by pushing eventual winner L. Khajuria all the way but falling short in 2nd.
The main event took place on Saturday, this two day, £1500 buy-in attracted some of the biggest names in UK poker. The awesome J. Kelly took the spoils and over £52,000 in prize money. In 3rd, a player some note as the best online Omaha player in Europe, Ben "Milkybarkid" Grundy scooped up over £20,000 for his troubles.
So, pats on the back all round to Grosvenor Luton for holding yet another successful festival. It seems few card room chains can match the popularity of Grosvenor right now. Up and down the country their festivals are pulling in record numbers. Long may it continue.
